KKN  Gurugram Desk | A major incident occurred in Maura village under Gidhaur block of Jamui district, Bihar, during the Durga idol immersion ceremony. According to early media reports, the situation quickly escalated into chaos when a large crowd gathered for the traditional ritual. What began as a peaceful religious event turned into a tragic accident due to overcrowding and mismanagement, leading to a stampede-like situation.

What Happened During the Durga Visarjan in Jamui?

Witnesses and locals reported that during the immersion of the idol of Goddess Durga, hundreds of devotees had assembled at the immersion site, as is customary during this annual ritual. However, the large turnout led to serious crowd control issues, with the narrow lanes and lack of barriers contributing to the confusion.

As the idol procession reached the immersion site, a sudden commotion broke out in the crowd. People began to push and panic, reportedly due to slippery ground conditions and lack of space. In the ensuing chaos, a stampede-like situation developed, leading to multiple injuries.

Tragic Turn: Devotees Fall Into Burning Fire Pit (Agnikund)

The situation became even more dangerous when a group of people, in an attempt to escape the chaos, fell into a burning Agnikund (sacrificial fire pit). According to reports:

  • 12 people fell into the fire pit during the panic.

  • At least 3 women were seriously burnt and are currently undergoing treatment for severe burn injuries.

This horrifying aspect of the tragedy has intensified concerns about lack of safety precautions at such large-scale public religious events.

Lack of Security and Crowd Management Raises Alarms

Initial assessments indicate that no proper crowd control mechanism was in place during the idol immersion ceremony. Eyewitnesses claim that no barricades, no clear entry or exit points, and limited police presence contributed to the chaos.

This incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved public safety planning, especially during mass gatherings in religious events. Every year, thousands participate in Durga Visarjan across Bihar, but poor crowd control measures continue to pose risks.

Who Is Responsible? Local Authorities Under Scrutiny

As news of the accident spread, questions are being raised about the preparedness of local administration. Reports suggest:

  • The Gidhaur block administration failed to anticipate the massive turnout.

  • There was no pre-event risk assessment or emergency response plan in place.

  • Emergency services were delayed in reaching the spot.

Locals allege that despite repeated warnings from community leaders about overcrowding and insufficient space near the immersion area, no proactive measures were taken by the district authorities.

Current Status of the Victims

The three women with severe burns are reportedly being treated in Jamui District Hospital, and doctors have stated their condition remains critical but stable.

Meanwhile, the other nine victims, who sustained minor burns and injuries during the stampede and fire pit accident, have been discharged after first aid.

Police and Administrative Response

Following the incident, Jamui district police and the local block officers reached the spot to control the situation and assist in the rescue efforts. A senior police officer has confirmed that an inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact cause and identify those responsible for the lack of safety measures.

Officials from the Disaster Management Department have also been roped in to assess the situation and recommend future protocols.

State Government’s Reaction

As the incident went viral on social media and local news, pressure mounted on the Bihar state government to respond. A statement is expected from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) soon. The opposition parties have already started questioning the state’s preparedness for festivals and the frequent occurrence of such mishaps in Bihar during large public events.

Political Reactions and Public Outrage

The tragedy has taken a political turn with leaders from opposition parties slamming the state government for negligence. Some have even demanded compensation for the victims and their families.

Citizens on social media platforms are expressing deep anger and demanding accountability. Many have shared videos from the site, showcasing the lack of infrastructure, absence of medical personnel, and the chaotic handling of the crowd.

Recurring Problem During Festive Seasons

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred during a religious event in Bihar. In the past decade, multiple stampedes and crowd-related tragedies have claimed dozens of lives, particularly during Chhath Puja, Kumbh Mela, and Durga Puja festivities.

Each time, promises of better planning and stricter safety norms are made, but implementation remains a concern.

Important Safety Guidelines for Public Gatherings

In light of repeated mishaps, safety experts have urged the state and local administrations to implement the following for all large-scale religious events:

  • Pre-event risk assessment of the site.

  • Deployment of adequate police force and volunteers for crowd control.

  • Installation of barricades and clear signages for smooth entry and exit.

  • Arrangements for first aid stations and ambulances at the venue.

  • Coordination with fire department for fire safety measures, especially near ceremonial flames.

The tragic accident during Durga idol immersion in Maura village is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by poor crowd management during public events. As three women fight for their lives, the question remains – how many more lives must be endangered before safety becomes a priority?

With the festive calendar packed in the coming months, including Ram Navami and Eid, this incident should serve as a warning. The district administration and state government must ensure that this doesn’t happen again.
